Oh joy. It’s that special time of the month. I feel achy, cranky, bloated. There’s a dull pain in my lower back, and abdomen. I grab the heating pad, Advil, fruits and chocolate, and get cozy in my bed. Recently, I’ve added a new addition to my period cramp relief ritual: essential oils! Normally I drop them into my humidifier or on my pillow, but I recently found out that you can use them to relieve period cramps as well!
I've compiled a list of essential oils that have been known to relieve painful cramps. I hope they provide you the same level of comfort, they provided me!

1. Lavender
I do not actually like the smell of lavender but it has beneficial properties that I greatly appreciate. Lavender reduces menstrual cramping and may also help with multiple PMS symptoms, from anger and irritability, to anxiety and fluid retention. Due to its relaxing and anti-inflammatory properties, not only does it encourage muscles to release tension, it also improves blood flow and helps reduce discomfort.
I've had the worst cramps since I got my copper IUD which is why I always use an arsenal of period-relief products on hand that I am so grateful for! SO to use, I recommend adding 12 drops of lavender oil with castor oil to your lower abdomen and back. Grab your heating pad and a hand towel so you don't get burnt and let the oil do its job! If you'd rather take it in the bath, you can add it to a magnesium-boosting epsom salt bath to ease the PMS pain.

With a serene aroma that is nutty with earthy, fruity and floral notes, this oil helps to promote calmness and relaxation. Not only does it help with PMS symptoms, it calms an anxious and over-analytical mind. Because it can aid both emotional and physical discomforts Clary Sage has become every girl's go-to oil.
