I thought this was a skincare myth..how wrong I was
We're going to dive straight into it.
1. Find your brush
If you haven't bought one already here are some of my favorite ones!
This is of course highly subjective because it depends on how sensitive your skin is and you're the only one that truly know how much bristle it can take. I've dropped a few recommendations below. FYI, I'm a huge fan of the circular one from Amazon :)
(My number 1 choice!)
In addition to being detachable for those hard to reach areas, this body brush is made of cactus bristle which is the firmest type of bristle and of course excellent for dry body brushing.
This adorable little body brush was handmade in Sweden from oiled maple and horsehair. It features a comfortably-shaped handle and soft yet very durable, horsehair bristles which are also an ideal choice for body brushes.
2. The Method
I dry brush daily now. I am a firm believer in the power of dry brushing. I love doing it before a shower. I started with a gentle brush and soft pressure but have now worked my way up to a firmer brush and a firmer pressure.
Here’s How to Dry Brush the Skin:
I always start from the feet and then work my way upwards. I brush the bottom of my feet and then use long smooth strokes for my lower legs. I go around my lower legs twice before I start on my upper legs. Use your other free hand and soothe the skin you just went over with the brush. This calms the skin down.
Then proceed the buttocks and brush upwards on both cheeks.
From there proceed to the stomach and brush in a circular clockwise direction twice.
Proceed towards the lower back and brush from the center outwards.
Then proceed to the arms and repeat the same process you used on your legs. Start at he palms and brush upwards on your lower arms and then your upper arms.
As a rule of thumb, make sure to always brush toward the center of the body.
After brushing and showering, apply a lotion to fully pamper your skin :)
And finally as with any good habit, stick to it.You're not going to see any results otherwise!
I use the below video to guide me through my steps. Feel free to check it out!
How To Dry Body Brush For Beautiful Smooth Skin
Note: Make sure to buy a new brush every 6 months or so as the bristles will wear out and so lose effectiveness. Also, I would recommend washing the brush with soap and water every 4-6 weeks to get rid of all the dead skin cells.
But, Does Skin Brushing Work?
I have only been dry brushing for a week or so but I am seeing a difference in the texture and firmness of my skin, especially on my legs. I am definitely a believer now. On top of that it's easy, therapeutic, feels so good, and is a doesn't take up much time or money. It's a win all around!
Dry brushing stimulates the lymph system, which helps the body remove toxins. Additionally it increase circulation and helps very much so with exfoliation. It's like a message for the largest organ you have, your skin! And I feel my skin never gets enough pampering so I'm all for it :)
