We all love baths. And what's more fun than running a bath and soaking in a vat of aromatic bubbles?? Granted bath bombs can be a little pricey, but when the ingredients are bought in bulk, it's pretty cost-effective. The process of making these bath bombs is also so gratifying, you can mix and match ingredients to your liking, add colors, different scents, you can be the inventor! If you have leftovers you can always save it for a later date, a house guest, or even gift them to someone!
The recipe I will be providing you with makes about 12 bath bombs, but the exact count will really depend on the size of the silicone molds you decide to use.
TIME: 10 MIN FOR MAKING + 1-2 DAYS TO DRY
COST: APPROXIMATELY $2 PER BATH BOMB
TOOLS & MATERIALS
8 oz baking soda
4 oz Epsom salt
4 oz corn starch
4 oz citric acid
Biodegradable glitter, dried flower petals, or sugar cake decorations, like flowers or stars (OPTIONAL)
2.5 tablespoons oil (jojoba, sweet almond, coconut olive, vegetable, or even baby oil)
About 1 tablespoon water
About 2 teaspoons essential oil (lavender, eucalyptus, rose are all popular for the bath)
About 4-6 drops of food coloring
12-18 silicone molds
Step 1: With the exception of the citric acid, mix ALL the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Use the whisk to make sure the mixture is clump-free.
Step 2: Pour all of the liquid ingredients in a jar with a top. Close the jar and shake it vigorously. This is the step where you need to make some important decisions about scent and color. You can tweak quantity of the scent and color to suit your taste - the varieties are absolutely endless! My go-to is a spa-like eucalyptus and lavender mix that totally gets me in the mood for a chill night.
Pro-tip: If you don't want to muddy the water, I suggest using a single color.
Step 3: Slowly add the liquid to the dry mixture. About a teaspoon at a time. Whisk the mixture as you go. Then add the citric acid. There will be a slight fizzing reaction, but nothing extreme! You should end up with a mixture that is similar to damp sand.
Step 4: Stuff the mixture firmly into the molds as soon as you reach the damp sand consistency. Otherwise, it may dry out if it stays in the bowl too long.
Pro-tip: Use a glass, mug, or spoon to push the mixture in as tight as possible.
Step 5: Let the bath bombs dry for 1-2 days. Then slowly and carefully loosen them from the mold and pop them out. Now you may use them or wrap them as gifts.
Step 6: Grab a glass of wine, a good book, and throw one into your bathtub.Surrender to the aromas and beautiful colors and bubbles. Enjoy the beautiful fruits of your labor! Turn on some music and light some candle to give yourself an even more spa-like experience. You deserve it!
